Fuse Opera Review: "Tosca" in the Cinema

Tosca_415
Bryn Terfel (Baron Scarpia) and Angela Gheorghiu (Tosca) in the Royal Opera House presentation of Tosca.

This time a spectacular Tosca from the Royal Opera House in London, part of a series of operas (Operas in the Cinema) showing at the Coolidge Corner Cinema in Brookline, MA, on weekend mornings at 10:00 through the spring. It's early in the morning, but well worth getting out of bed to see and hear these presentations.

Unlike the Met in HD, which gussies up its productions with interviews and full-length intermissions, this is relatively bare-bones presentation with intermissions condensed so that there's not even time to go to the washroom. Tosca is directed by Duncan Macfarland and stars Angela Gheorghiu in the title role, Jonas Kaufmann as her lover Mario Cavaradossi, and the magnificent Bryn Terfel incarnates the terrifying and powerful Baron Scarpia. Antonio Pappano is the energetic and much-beloved conductor of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. This is an unforgettable production that had us at the edge of our seats.
